Aside from the fact that it’s lovely, sumptuous and tasty, scientists have recently found three new reasons why you should pour yourself a glass of red wine tonight:
- Red wine may slow aging. Forget the botox and the calorie-restriction diets (which sound like utter hell to me!). This New York Times article by Nicholas Wade explains how a compound in red wine — reservatrol — may help slow aging and may one day be a potent drug against diseases like Alzheimer’s.
- Red wine may keep the liver healthy. Ironic, isn’t it, that although alcohol in excess can cause liver damage, one glass of red wine a day can prevent problems in your liver? A study of over 11,000 people found that red wine drinkers had less liver damage than beer drinkers and tee-totalers. Pass me that glass, baby!
- Red wine may curb fat cells. This is probably the happiest news dieters have heard in a long time. It appears that reservatrol (oh this magical compound) prevents “pre-fat cells” from becoming mature fat cells. The compound also produces a protein that helps prevent obesity.
I’d write more, but I’ve gotta pour myself a glass of red wine right now. My health depends on it.
